These lovlies had their debut at the Ryman last week for a reception hosted

When Elizabeth Broyhill approached us about providing centerpieces for the 2012 Power of the Purse luncheon, I already had terrariums on my mind.  We had this beautiful 100% recycled glass that I was just dying to use for an event.  Elizabeth is a very giving and respectful soul.  She said she had in mind something that was “living” and was interested in doing terrariums for the luncheon.  I guess great minds really do think alike... and so began our design process.

Of course, I showed her the glass I had in mind and she loved it. Yes!

In an effort to “Buy Local”, we were able to source all the plants from Holtkamp Greenhouses on Lischey Avenue.  Our selections consisted of beautiful African Violets, maiden hair fern, golden moss and green & white fittonias. 

Holtkamp is the world’s largest grower of African Violets.  They have a commitment to advancing the industry through development of new plant characteristics and innovative growing techniques using extensive research and development.

They are proudly grown in the U.S.A. and since 1997 have participated in a Social Responsibility Program, an organization of suppliers that import goods into the country.

The Hen and Chicken succulents were donated by a single provider, my mom!

Thanks to our wonderful staff for their contribution in this effort to give back to the community.  Victoria Davenport was responsible for planting the majority of the bubble terrariums.  Ruth Greenfield loving planted all the succulent cylinders and tended them for weeks. Rolling them outside for some good sunshine and water and bringing them back in almost every day.  I promise, I think she had named them all by the time it was over! 

John made numerous trips to Lowes to get gravel and dirt.  Then at 5:00AM on Monday morning all five of us, John, Joan, Ruth, Nathan and Victoria rolled in to give all 204 containers the final once-over, load them in their boxes and on to the “big truck” for delivery to Loews Vanderbilt for their big debut. 

It was very fulfilling to know that all our hard work could take these living plants and transform them into something that would generate funds to help enrich the lives of women all over Nashville that are in need.  Thank you to Elizabeth and everyone at the Community Foundation for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful event.
